COMPOSITION
Each ml of the ophthalmic solution contains 5mg Chloramphenicol B.P. 1g of eye ointment contains 10mg Chloramphenicol B.P.
ACTION
Chloramphenicol is a broad spectrum antibiotic active against most gram-negative and some gram-positive microorganisms, rickettsiae, chlamydia, mycoplasma and the causing agents of brucellosis.
INDICATIONS
Bacterial conjunctivitis, suppurative keratitis, infections following the injuries of the conjunctiva, cornea, and blepharitis. Superficial infections of the external ear canal caused by bacteria susceptible to Chloramphenicol.
DOSAGE AND ADMINSTRATION
Eye Drops: 1 to 2 drops 4 times daily.
Ear Drops: 2 to 3 drops 2 to 3 times daily.
Eye Ointment: The Ointment is applied three to four times daily or even more often if necessary, into the lower conjunctival sac.
CONTRA-INDICATIONS AND PRECAUTION
Chloramphenicol is contra-indicated in patients with history of haematological disorders and in neonates. Chloramphenicol should not be combined with another
antibiotic or a Sulphonamide in an ophthalmic preparation. Allergy may appear in long-term treatment. In such cases the drug should be withdrawn.
